About Us

The organization known as the Winnipeg Dental Society (WDS), is governed by a constitution and a code of ethics. The constitution was adopted February 9th, 1956. The code of ethics is identical to that of the Canadian Dental Association. A copy of the constitution is available for download here (PDF format).

The mission statement of the WDS is to raise the standard of dental science, practice, art and literature, and to promote among dentists mutual improvements and good fellowship.

The WDS consists of active, honorary and life members. Active members are dentists who are legally and ethically practicing their profession and who have paid their annual dues. Honorary members shall be elected from outside the profession, and would be someone who has made a valuable contribution to the science or art of dentistry, or has rendered important services to the profession. Honorary members may also be elected from inside the profession if the society wishes to honour a particular member. Honorary members do not hold office, are non-voting and do not pay dues. Life members shall be elected from active members, and shall be exempt from all dues. Life and Honorary members shall be selected in the following manner. They must be nominated in writing by a member, be considered by the executive, and be elected at a general meeting.

Program Overview 2015-2016

Dear Colleagues,

The 2014-2015 Clinical Year was another successful one.  We had outstanding attendance at all of the lectures; the sports events were well attended; and the wine tasting event held at Winnipeg Art Gallery was a huge success.  All members should be very proud of the tremendous value they received for their membership. It is the best deal around in Canada for dental continuing education.

Website: Our revamped website has allowed for ease of registrations for all WDS events. The website also allows the importing of speaker notes directly to members computer, smart phone or tablet.  This will be the 3rd year that members will be able to pay for their membership, blue cross insurance and for staff to attend lectures online. All registrations for the lectures must be done online.

The 2015-2016 clinic year has another great line-up of speakers and topics.  In fact, we have five outstanding clinical presentations that include a luncheon.  We are also sponsoring a lecture at the MDA Convention on January 29, 2016 in Winnipeg. The WDS Annual General Meeting will be held at the Victoria Inn, Winnipeg on April 8, 2016.  We encourage all members to attend the sports and wine tasting events as they present a great opportunity to de-stress, have fun, meet new members, and meet friends.

Dr. Christie Laberge

If you do not have Blue Cross coverage and you wish to join, please contact the WDS Office at 988-5300 ext 1 and request an application form or visit: http://www.winnipegdentalsociety.org/docs/MB_Blue_Cross_Application.pdf

NOTE: All WDS Blue Cross subscribers must advise Blue Cross of any change in his/her own dependant's status resulting from marriage, divorce, change of residence, birth or legal adoption within 60 days after the effective date - failure to do so brings about a one year waiting period.   Please contact the WDS office if you have any change so a “Notice of Change” form can be sent to you.

Blue Cross and the WDS Executive have accepted a change in the age for children deemed as dependents.  A “dependent” will now be an unmarried child of an enrolled dentist, under 21 years of age and dependent for support on the enrolled dentist, and an unmarried child under the age of 25 who is a full-time student at a specialized school, college or university.

CHANGES TO the WDS Blue Cross coverage for 2016:

Pharmacy – Increased to 70% coverage
Vision care – increased to $500/24months
Massage Therapy – increased to $500/year
Chiropractor Care – increased to $500/year.
    Physiotherapy – increased to $500/year

    Blue Net Card for Members

For a complete explanation of the coverage please visit: http://www.winnipegdentalsociety.org/docs/WDS_Health_Benefits_Booklet_Blue_Cross_2013.pdf

For those dentists, currently enrolled in the Group Plan who have dependents who are students between the ages of 21 and 25, if you are interested in providing coverage to your dependents, please phone the WDS office at 988-5300 for a form to update your listing of dependents.

If you have a dependent child over the age of 18 years who has income, it would be to your advantage to have the child register with Pharmacare. Pharmacare pays 100% of drug costs and our plan pays 50%.

  4. Other Programs:

Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library:
As in the past, the WDS continues to support the University of Manitoba College of Dentistry Library Fund. Our contribution is a voluntary one. I hope everyone will help with this endeavor. Both the Health Sciences Library and WDS are very appreciative of your continued support, and you are encouraged to visit the library. A listing of all titles purchased with the fund is received at the WDS every June, and can be shared upon request.

    WDS Scholarship:
The Winnipeg Dental Society maintains a scholarship that is given out to a dental student enrolled at the University of Manitoba – Faculty of Dentistry.  In order to maintain the current level of funding and hopefully increase the amount being provided in the form of a scholarship we need your support in voluntarily donating to this fund on behalf of the WDS.

    United Way Campaign:
Last year the dental profession raised 100% of its goal for the United Way. Please make Dr. Carmine Scarpino’s job easier by responding promptly when you receive his letter. Also, please remember to consider making all your charitable donations through the United Way's directed giving.  It makes it simpler for you, and you still receive recognition from each recipient. At present there is no added surcharge for this type of directed donation.

Clinic Reminders:
A complete listing of the 2015-2016 WDS lectures is available online. Please diarize the lectures that you will be attending on your appointment schedule at your practice. Again, registration for the lectures must be done online. When registering online please remember to indicate if you will be having lunch and any food allergies you may have. Register online.

Non-member fees:
The fee for one clinical program/lunch for a non-member dentist will be $200, while the fees for Oral Health Team members attending a clinic session will be:  Dental Hygienists - $75; Registered Dental Assistants - $50, and Dental Staff - $50.00.

LATE REGISTRATION FEES:
Because of problems and abuses in the past, the WDS Executive is reminding you that there will be a $50 late fee for any WDS member registering after the deadline. There will also be a $50 surcharge for any Blue Cross payments received separately and after the WDS membership deadline.

I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming meetings and events of the Winnipeg Dental Society.

Respectfully,

Dr. Peter Kowal
President, Winnipeg Dental Society
